Class Descriptions -- Spring 2020 (January 6 - April 24, 2020)

MONDAY
Zumba Gold Tone up, build strength, and dance your way to good health with this easy-to-follow, Latin-inspired, low-impact, cardio-based workout. Class includes strength training with weights or resistance bands and mat work. Bring your own weights and mat.
When: Monday, 9-10 am
Where: Self-Help Center for the Elderly/Central Park Recreation Center, 50 E. 5th Avenue, San Mateo
Fee: $50

Low-Impact Aerobics: Thirty minutes of aerobic exercise to toe-tapping music from decades past and present, followed by 30 minutes of stretching, strength training with weights or resistance bands (bring your own weights), and balance exercises.
When: Monday, 10-11 am

Where: Self-Help Center for the Elderly/Central Park Recreation Center, 50 E. 5th Avenue, San Mateo
Fee: $50

Better Balance, Level 2: Improve your balance by practicing simple, effective exercises to help increase your leg strength, enhance your flexibility, and improve your posture. The class combines seated, standing, and gait exercises to help increase your functional balance skills. Prerequisite: You must complete Better Balance Level 1 and/or have instructor approval prior to registering. Class size limited to 20 participants.

When: Monday, 11:30 am - 12:30 pm

TUESDAY

Pilates on the Ball: An intermediate level class designed to tone and strengthen your "core" - the abdominal, gluteal, hip, and postural muscles - using a large exercise ball to add challenge and variety to Pilates-based movements. The ball will jumpstart your workout by recruiting both deep and superficial muscles during even the most basic exercises. Please bring your own exercise ball, mat, and weights. (See "How to Purchase a Stability Ball" under the "Features" tab to find out what size to buy and where to find one.) Class size limited to 20 participants.
When: Wednesday, 12:15 pm - 1:15 pm

Better Bones - Exercise for Posture, Balance, and Bone Health **: Benefit your body, bones, and mind in this gentle Pilates-based fitness program. You will practice safe and effective standing, seated, and floor exercises designed to improve posture and balance, and increase strength and flexibility. Please note: You must be able to get down to and up from the floor for mat exercises. Bring a mat, large pillow, and small towel.
When: Wednesday, 1:45 pm - 2:45 pm
Where: San Mateo Adult School, 789 E. Poplar Ave., San Mateo
Fee: $120

**Class size limited to 15 people.

THURSDAY
Better Balance, Level 2: Improve your balance by practicing simple, effective exercises to help increase your leg strength, enhance your flexibility, and improve your posture. The class combines seated, standing, and gait exercises to help increase your functional balance skills. Prerequisite: You must complete Better Balance Level 1 and/or have instructor approval prior to registering. Class size limited to 20 participants.

When: Thursday, 11:30 am - 12:30 pm
Where: Millbrae Community Center, 623 Magnolia Ave., Millbrae
Fee: $50


Better Balance, Level 1: Rebuild your strength and fine-tune your flexibility in this 45-minute mostly seated exercise class designed for older adults who are starting to experience some mobility difficulties. Please note: You must be able to independently stand behind a chair (with the chair for support) for some exercises.
When: Thursday, 12:45 pm - 1:30 pm
Where: Millbrae Community Center, 623 Magnolia Ave., Millbrae
** This is an 8-week class, limited to 10 participants. There are 2 sessions in the Spring semester: 1/9 - 2/27 & 3/5 - 4/23. Fee is $55 per 8-week session.**

Class Dates and Fees

My classes are offered through the San Mateo Adult School's Active Adults (formerly "50-Plus") program and are designed for adults 55 and up. The fee is $50 - $120 per series (depending on the location, length, and class size). Classes do not meet on holidays.
